    ORC President's Reception - April 26

The President's Reception is held annually at the home of Mike & Susan Zwer to recognize the service of our president and Board, and to celebrate the accomplishments of our runners. This event is held shortly after the Boston Marathon, so we will have video and stories to share from those that ran in the granddaddy of all marathons. Drinks will be provided; please bring a covered dish to share.

    Date: Wednesday, April 26, 2006
    Time: 6 - 8:30 pm
Place: Mike & Susan Zwer at
3630 E. Grant Street, Orlando, FL

    ORC Scholarships

    History
The Charles M. Rowson, Jr. Memorial Scholarship was established in 1986 to assist local high school graduates with college expenses. The students must have participated in high school track or cross country and must have achieved high academic honors. Charles Rowson was an active ORC member, who died suddenly at a young age in 1983. In his memory, an ORC race was established to raise funds for the first scholarships awards, 2 per year. Then in 1994 another race was established to raise enough money for 4 awards, the "Run with The Fat Guy" race. The Fat Guy is Dennis Salvagio, an ORC member, and the race sponsors were the Outback Steakhouse and Harcourt Brace School Publishers. This race in turn became "The Outback Steakhouse Distance Classic 12K/3K" in 1996. The Outback Distance Classic 12K & 3K" now funds FOUR $1,000 scholarships each year and any additional earnings are placed in a scholarship trust fund to grow in value.<

    Purpose
The Charles M. Rowson, Jr. Memorial Scholarship is ORC's way of giving back to the community something to help foster interest in the sport we love. By supporting young people who have an interest in running, we are encouraging healthy, productive and disciplined lifestyles in these young adults.

What Can You Do and See in Four Days in Japan
The trip to Japan is a wonderful experience for our club members. Karl-Heinrich Barsch has shared his thoughts on his recent trip to Japan. As Karl discovered, you can do a lot in four days when your hosts are our wonderful URC friends.

What Can You Do and See in Four Days In Japan -- A lot more than you think, including the Tokyo Bay Half- Marathon of course, if you are lucky enough to go with Orlando Runners Club. Your Japanese hosts won’t waste your time. A special Urayasu City Bus is waiting for you at the airport to take you straight to the City Hall where the mayor and other city officials are waiting to welcome you and to supply you with a very handy blue parka that says “Urayasu City Tokyo Bay Marathon.” You’ll need it, because in early February it’s cold in Japan....
